While performing Hajj, Muslims remember and commemorate the trials and triumphs of the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), by slaughtering an animal such as a sheep, goat or camel by their own hands. This is often misunderstood by people who are outside the faith.
Allah has allowed us to eat meat, only if we pronounce His name while sacrificing, i.e, at the solemn act of taking life.
The day brings rejoicing and happiness in the Muslim world. The rejoicing is not at the end of the holy month of Ramadan but it is the happiness that a man feels after successfully finishing a very important task.
The animal meat from the sacrifice on Eid al-Adha divided into three shares. One-third is given to family and relatives, one-third is given to friends and neighbors, and the third share is given to the poor and needy.
The act symbolizes the willingness to give up things that are close to our hearts to follow Allah’s commands. It also shows willingness to give up something that belongs to us, to strengthen ties of friendship and to help the ones who are needy.
Muslims recognize that all blessings come only from Allah, and we should share with others with open hearts.
